Abstract

Technology is changing fast and following divergent trajectories but knowing which path to follow is not easy. Unfortunately it is not simply technical choices that present themselves. The "credit crunch" can have as big an impact on IT systems as a major release from Microsoft.

One techniques that has been used successfully to guide decision making has been scenario planning. It has a long pedigree and was credited with helping Shell anticipate the 1970s oil crisis. It is of equal utility for informing the technology planning process, in an uncertain world.

This meeting will take the form of an interactive workshop in which you are involved in an actual scenario planning exercise. This will introduce you to the use of the technique, but hopefully will also sensitise you to a new way of thinking about the trends and uncertainties impacting on your business and affecting the technologies you work with now and in the future.
