Everyone’s talking about data. They say it’s the "new oil". This seems to mean it’s what makes everything work these days and if you don’t use it well your business will be less efficient and less competitive than your rivals. But how true is that?
Like many popular phenomena, the terms bandied around are rarely actually defined. It’s taken for granted that we know what they mean. But do we? What really is "big data"? Does the Internet of Things really exist, and if so what does it mean to me? What are "cloud solutions" and why should I care? And must we really all be "data driven"?!
In this talk, Peter Chase will use the language of business to demystify these terms, and help explain the link between new data technologies and how businesses operate. Using examples of how data solutions are helping his clients at Datalytyx, Peter will suggest practical steps a business can take to explore and exploit technology to offer better customer service, reduce costs and stay ahead of the game.
Peter Chase is an experienced business leader with a technology background. In a career spanning thirty years, he has seen the advent of email, the Internet, media going digital and, most recently, the way data is transforming the way companies do business. Through working at the BBC for nine years, and in several software companies since, Peter has helped deliver business change using new technologies. A graduate of Imperial College, he now works for Datalytyx, a company which engineers solutions that use data and the Internet of Things to help businesses become more "data driven".
